At some point, unnoticed, the wind

turned about

and came at our backs with a push,

and kicking together, but so as not to splash,

we cheered ourselves, as the beach,

in glimpses at the top of swells,

came slowly,

slowly closer, and that face

became a house again,

knots of tiny bathers below it,

and lone, dark figures bending for shells.

We kicked and rested.

Shouts and cries came over the surf

far from the pier

where our toes touched sand again.

Children ran and dove, shellers stooped,

but no one arrived to wrap us

in blankets or hugs.

Unnoticed, we had been swept away.

The boy, shaking water, left his tube,

splashed from the shallows,

and ran toward the pier

where his mother

and the man who might one day be a father

returned to retrieve that leaky black tube

and look about

for another man now hidden

above them on the fishing pier.
